Auf ihrem ersten Soloalbum ‹A Monastic Trio» zollte die Pianistin und Harfenistin Alice Coltrane 1968 ihrem im Vorjahr verstorbenen Ehemann John Tribut. Unterstützung erhielt sie dabei von den Musikern, mit denen sie zuvor bereits in der Band ihres Mannes zusammengespielt hatte. Während das Album damals von Jazzkritikern eher lauwarm begrüßt wurde, genießt es heute den Ruf ein früher Meilenstein des noch jungen Spiritual Jazz zu sein.
