Orrins Keepnews' Kommentar: »Als ich 1960 mit der Erstellung der endgültigen Präsentation von [Wes] Montgomery begann, erkannte ich die Notwendigkeit, die Dinge so klar und unkompliziert wie möglich zu halten. Es gab mindestens drei einzigartige Aspekte seines Spielstils: Er spielte mit dem Daumen und benutzte nie ein Plektrum... und seine Solos enthielten fast immer zwei Elemente, die routinemäßig als ›unmöglich‹ bezeichnet wurden - seine Verwendung von Oktaven und von pianistischen Blockakkorden. Als Autodidakt (seine erste ›Lektion‹ bestand im intensiven Hören von Charlie-Christian-Platten) und nie in der Lage, Noten zu lesen, beherrschte er den Blues und das Balladentempo perfekt und war ein beeindruckender Komponist.«
