In 1955, when Stan Getz recorded the album West Coast Jazz in Los Angeles, the East Coast--West Coast controversy was a hot-button topic in jazz circles. But if "West Coast jazz" means a style of playing that is cool and unemotional, then this album -- recorded by a group of transplanted musicians, most of them graduates of the Woody Herman band-- clearly does not fit that description. West Coast Jazz captures a young and energetic Stan Getz not only at his most lyrical, but also at his most virile.
