So wie er seine ganze Karriere zweigleisig gefahren war, tat es Sonny Criss auch in seinen letzten Lebensjahren: Während er für das Label Muse in der Mitte der 1970er Jahre eher klassische Jazzalben einspielte, nahm er für Impulse Records deutlich kommerzieller orientierte Scheiben mit Funk, Rhythm’n’Blues, etwas Jazz und Pop auf. Zu den Highlights im Repertoire von “Warm And Sonny” und “The Joy Of Sax” zählen Criss’Interpretationen von Oliver Nelsons “Stolen Moments” (featuring Trompeter Blue Mitchell!) und Sonny Clarks Klassiker “Cool Struttin’” (die beiden Sonnys hatten 1956 zusammen ein Cole-Porter-Album aufgenommen). Das damalige Pop-Publikum sprach der Altsaxophonist dagegen mit Songs von Stevie Wonder (“Don’t You Worry ‘Bout A Thing”, “Have A Talk With God”), Earth, Wind & Fire (“That’s The Way Of The World”), Phil Spector (“You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’”) und Billy Preston (“You Are So Beautiful”) an.
Anlässlich des 50. Jubiläums des Impulse-Labels wurden die beiden Klassiker “The Joy Of Sax” und “Warm And Sonny” jetzt innerhalb der neuen IMPULSE 2-ON-1-Serie zusammen auf einer Midprice-CD veröffentlicht. Beide Alben wurden neu digital remastert, die kompletten LP-Artworks sind im farbigen Booklet reproduziert.
