Im Januar 1956 war das MJQ bei einem neuen Label mit neuem Personal und es wurden Zweifel an ihrem Fortbestand geäußert. »Fontessa« war das Aufnahmedebüt dieser Besetzung, die im Übrigen insgesamt 30 Jahre lang intakt bleiben sollte. Die Erfolgsprinzipien hinter ihrem Erfolg sind hier verewigt, wobei die elfminütige Titelsuite die einzigartige Mischung aus Kammermusik und Blues der Gruppe verkörpert.
