Quincy Jones ist es zu verdanken, dass Miles Davis sich für das Montreux Jazz Festival 1991 zu Wiederaufführungen seiner bis ins Jahr 1949 zurückliegenden Arbeiten mit Gil Evans bereit erklärte.
Das musikalische Material stammt aus der Zusammenarbeit von Davis und Evans, und zwar aus den Alben Birth of the Cool, Miles Ahead, Porgy and Bess und Sketches of Spain.
Dieses Konzert vom 8. Juli 1991, das nur wenige Monate vor Miles Davis Tod im Herbst des gleichen Jahres stattfand, war das letzte von zahlreichen Gastspielen, die der amerikanische Jazz-Virtuose beim Montreux Jazz Festival gab. Obwohl Davis eigentlich die Meinung vertrat, man solle niemals zurückschauen, ließ er sich von Quincy Jones und Claude Nobs überreden, an einer Hommage für seinen großartigen Freund Gil Evans teilzunehmen, der 1988 verstorben war.
Dieses wahrhaft einzigartige Konzert war nicht nur ein historischer Moment
sondern auch ein musikalischer Triumph, der zum Glück für die Nachwelt festgehalten wurde.
Miles Davis war eine Lichtgestalt der Musik des 20. Jahrhunderts, dieses Konzert
ist ebenso eine Hommage an ihn wie auch an den verstorbenen Gil Evans.

This concert from 8 July 1991 was the last of Miles Davis’ many appearances at the Montreux Jazz Festival and took place only a few months before his death. Despite a defiant “never look back” philosophy, Miles was persuaded by Quincy Jones and Claude Nobs to take part in this tribute to his great friend Gil Evans, who had passed away in 1988. This truly unique concert was an historical event and a musical triumph, thankfully captured here for posterity. Miles Davis was a giant of 20th century music and this concert is as much a tribute to him as it is to the late Gil Evans.
