+ Bill Charlap
The lush tenor tone of Houston Person and the economic stylings of pianist Bill Charlap was an inspired pairing. Together one afternoon at the famed Rudy Van Gelder studio they laid down ten tracks of standards and near-standards which should be heard by all those who fancy themselves jazz players. Every track is a model of musicianship, with each artist totally at the service of the music they have chosen to play. There is no competitive jockeying for position here, no ostentatious show which becomes virtuosity for virtuosity's sake. Instead these are two men devoted to their art and determinedto make music which is uniquely communicative. Tunes include McCoy Tyner's hauntingly beautiful title song, the lovely "If I Ruled the World" and the favorites "Sweet Lorraine" and "S'Wonderful". This is great music making by two masters of their art.
