In den 1950er Jahren nahm der der Baritonsaxofonist Gerry Mulligan eine exzellente Serie von Alben auf, die ihn im Zusammenspiel mit anderen Saxofonisten zeigten - mal mit Legenden, mal mit Zeitgenossen. Als eines der besten und überraschendsten Alben dieser Reihe gilt das Zusammentreffen mit dem Duke-Ellington-Solisten und Altsaxofonisten Johnny Hodges, das 1959 stattfand. Peter Marsh schrieb 2003 in einer Rezension des Albums für die BBC, dass hier auf faszinierende Art und Weise »West-Coast-Coolness und East-Coast-Hipness miteinander kollidieren«.
