Eric Dolphys komplettes original Album Out There (New Jazz NJLP8252) war auch sein zweites als Bandleader nach Outward Bound.

Die Instrumentierung auf diesem Album ist ungewöhnlich und präsentiert Dolphy im Quartett mit Ron Carter am Cello, George Duvivier am Bass und Roy Haynes am Schlagzeug.

Als Bonus wurde hier das komplette Album Looking Ahead (New Jazz NJLP8247) von Altsaxophonist und Flötist Ken McIntyre hinzugefügt, das zwei Monate vor Out There als Quintett aufgenommen wurde (Dolphy agiert an diesem Tag als einziger Bläser neben McIntyre).
