Ella Fitzgerald has had many great accompanists, but her 15-year association with pianist Tommy Flanagan resulted in some of her most memorable performances. Flanagan was the incomparable Ella's musical director for the first time in 1956 and their uncannily close musical relationship continued through three stretches until 1978. In this 1977 concert recording with Flanagan, bassist Keter Betts, and the elegant drummer Bobby Durham, she does some of her most heartfelt and unrestrained singing, including remarkable renditions of the ballad "My Man" and a swinging Duke Ellington classic, "I Ain't Got Nothin' But the Blues."
