This giant of jazz stirred ladies’ hearts with his tenor saxophone. It is true that few musicians have shown so much tenderness and sensuality, especially when interpreting ballads. He was fed on Coleman Hawkins’ grandiose style and contributed extremely voluptuous aspects to it, giving a full and warm tone and phrasing of rare elegance. In 1941, Count Basie had given Don Byas the seemingly impossible task of succeeding Lester Young, then in the mid-forties the arrogant virtuoso went to join the young contenders of new jazz. Dizzy Gillespie chose him as his partner for his first ‘be bop’ discs. “Many features of what is known as bop were invented by me”, he declared in 1965, adding, “You can hear some Coltrane patterns in my playing, but if Coltrane changed his tone, as I’ve often tried to persuade him, you’d find it hard to know who was playing…”. We may listen to him here at the zenith of his art-form, recorded in New York with high quality rhythm sections, then in Paris on the threshold of a second career to take place in Europe.
