Die hier enthaltenen Live-Aufnahmen gehören zu den allerbesten aus Billie Holiday letzten Jahren. Ein Teil der Motivation hinter dem Carnegie Hall-Konzert von 1956 war, Billies Autobiografie Lady Sings the Blues zu promoten.
Die Musik war ganz auf Billies Charakterpart abgestimmt, verstärkt durch Lesungen aus ihrem Buch von Gilbert Millstein. Obwohl die LP 1956 aufgenommen wurde, wurde sie erst 1961 veröffentlicht, fast zwei Jahre nach Billies Tod am 17. Juli 1959 im Alter von leider nur 44 Jahren.
