Three of the brightest new lights in blues have delivered a magical set on Telarc that combines the traditional sounds of the Delta with modern electric blues-rock. Kenny Neal, Tab Benoit, and Debbie Davies have each learned from the masters, and on Homesick for the Road it shows how completely they have incorporated their musical educations into their own personal artistic visions.
Native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Kenny Neal is the son of the legendary vocalist and harpist Raful Neal. He has toured extensively as Buddy Guy's bass player and spent time in the great Junior Wells' band. His 1998 Telarc debut, Blues Fallin' Down Like Rain (enhanced CD-83435), which featured a combination of blues classics and original compositions, confirmed his position as a leading light among the new generation of blues players.
Louisiana-based bluesman Tab Benoit is also a product of the fertile Baton Rouge scene. Learning from such veterans as Tabby Thomas, former Howlin' Wolf and Little Walter pianist Henry Gray, and Slim Harpo alumnus Rudi Richard, Benoit has established himself as one of the most dynamic young blues' talents.
Debbie Davies began playing guitar throughout the local West Coast bar scene, and eventually became the featured guitarist with Albert Collins and the Icebreakers. She received recognition as a guitarist on John Mayall's 1990 release A Sense of Place and has since embarked on a successful solo career.
Homesick for the Road is the sound of three talented performers sparked to new heights in an exhilerating collaborative effort. With superb backing from keyboardist Bruce Katz, bassist Rod Carey, and drummer Per Hanson, the work of Tab Benoit, Debbie Davies and Kenny Neal on Homesick for the Road is sure to inspire a whole new generation of blues fans.
