    Schmidt: tragic but marvellous

What a most tragic composer he was, Franz Schmidt! Before World War 2 seen as an excellent craftsman, after the war as a tragic collaborator. O.k., let's see that as ,,water under the bridge'': he was an excellent composer but a bad, misled, naive politician (not exactly the skill of composers...). And now we have this exceptional performance of his even exceptional quintet in A (for the left hand), a gift to his friend Paul von Wittgenstein, wounded during World War 1.
I am - o.k.: my secret - since long a fan of Schmidt, so I won't be ,,objective''. I have in my cd collection many performances of his famous Quintet in A. But this new CPO-record sets a (true) standard for the future. Excellent, 5 stars: the ensemble - understanding the composer ultimately! - , the performance and, at last, the superb recording. Do we want more, for the next future?
    I don't, to be honest.

Mr Czerny: more of this champaign, please!

Some composers are forgotten - justly or unjustly -, some are remembered for the wrong reasons. And now we'll introduce mr Carl Czerny. Lifelong friend and only pupil of - yes! - Ludwig van Beethoven.
And - by the way - my bad dream for his ,,boring'' piano etudes (did make him an even famous as wealthy man!).
The versatile Sheridan Ensemble is presenting a brand new and sparkling Czerny as a true craftsman and a magnificent composer of string quartets.
This Capriccio double cd brings us the quartets in A minor (world premiere recording), D minor, D major (world premiere) and E minor.
The Sheridan Ensemble we hear here at his best, playing with vigour and brightness in excellent harmony and recorded in a superb sound. Czerny did write many string quartets (how many we don't know; much are still lost) and I hope and pray Yuki Kasai (violin), Matan Dagan (violin), Florian Donderer (viola) and Anna Carewe (cello) will perform all we might still discover! And, by the way: sorry mr Czerny. Of course you did write excellent etudes; I was a very bad piano pupil....

    A hidden treasure

How many composers are unjustly neglected? 1000 or a million - please will you give me the right answer? But... Andres Isasi (1890-1940, a true Basque) is an excellent candidate. He did write marvellous music - for the concert hall, the music room, the church. Who does know it (or him) nowadays? We will!
The - too, too shy - Isasi Quartet - four musicians of excellent education, masters of the string quartet as a ,, discussion by four intelligent people''- concluded with this third cd - a record project for NAXOS: 5 string quartets and the violin sonata in F minor op. 25. Music of the (start of) 20th century, composed in a subtle way, keeping up the ultimate standards of composing.
Please, let me invite you to rediscover this - hidden - composer. Let us discover the Isasi Quartet!

    REFERENCE CD

What a surprise! After so many interpretations of the Bach partitas we now find a brilliant, new, stylish strong and highly individual one! This is Bach for the forthcoming years, a reference cd in a joyful, chrystal clear and technically incomparable way. Give us more, please; any composer willl be a member of the international Parthenon by Igor Levit.

    Secrets from Sweden

Atterberg (best known for his sculptural symphonies) and Rangstrom (composer/writer in all genres, but a true champion of chamber music) are since long perhaps the best kept secrets of Skandinavian (Swedish) music.CPO brought the two men together on this surprising cd.Two seldom played string quartets of Atterberg and the only one of Rangstrom are performed by the Stenhammar String Quartet, four robust playing musicians on a sometimes pretty bumpy ride with always a safe arrival at the end.
By the way: do we know this remarkable ensemble? Yes - last years they performed the complete quartets of Stenhammar. Two (acclaimed) volumes are in the shop already, I can't wait for number three. But look (and hear!): here we have a more than satisfiing ,,intermezzo''.

    A lost son rediscovered

He was a friend of Brahms and a student of Dvorak, a famous mounteneer and a brilliant but now nearly forgotten composer:
    Leone Sinigaglia (1868-1944) from Italy.
But there is justice! The distinguished label Toccata Classics and the Universitry of Maine (USA) now present a cd with a representative choice of his chamber music, performed by Solomia Soroka (violin), Noreen Silver (cello) and Philip Silver (piano). Violinist and pianist are adjunct faculty member and associate professor at the Maine University and some works were recorded there. The two longer compositions are the violin sonata op.44 (well made melodic music in a romantic style) and the magnificent
cello sonata in C major op.41, for me the masterpiece of this
cd. Two small works for violin and piano, a romance and the cavatina in G major op.13, are completing this rediscovering.

    Hurrah for Gibbs

He's well known for his songs (in Great-Britain) but unjustly neglected for his chamber music: Armstrong Gibbs (1889-1960). But..times are changing. After a cd with his works for piano trio by the London Piano Trio, two members of this eminent ensemble, Olga Dudnik (piano) and Robert Atchison, are here with a superb performance of his complete works for violin and piano on the Guild label. Music for a quiet afternoon on a foggy day (to give a short impression). Charming, well made chamber music, showing the craftmanship of Gibbs in - for exemple - the Suite op.101, two sonatas (the ,,lyric'' and no.1 in E) and Three Pieces. It was ,,great fun'' to record this cd, Robert Atchison wrote me.
    And we can hear it!

    Rehabilitation

Volkmar Andreae (1879-1962) was a famous music director (Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich) but also a lesser known excellent composer. The Locrian Ensemble of London (with guests) is championing his chamber music on the Guild label:piano trios, string quartets, a well made quartet for flute & string trio etc.
This - third - cd is one of the finest with an early (1898) ,,first''
string quartet, the violin sonata op.4, six piano pieces op. 20 (Fali Pavri, piano) and the string trio op.29. Compliments for putting Andreae in het spotlights (again), the performance of this seldom heard music and the series.

    Dresdner Streich Trio excellent

Another top cd of the Dresdner Streichtrio. Lesser known works of a surprising range of composers: Kodaly, Strauss, Sibelius, Dohnanyi,Francaix, Enescu and Tchaikowsky. Three concentrated musicians, as always a perfect ensemble.
For me this pleasant cd confirms the high rating of the performance of works of Wilhelm Berger and Ernst Naumann, a recent Querstand cd.

    Graener chamber music

A nearly forgotten ,,composer on the political edge' wrote more than charming chamber music. Three hurrah's for the Hyperion Trio for the courage to present this cd. And now the string quartets!

In the tradition of CPO: a unjustly (nearly) forgotten composer relaunced in a magnificent way. Charming, well made string quartets with often surprising musical themes in a brilliant performance of ,,the Mannheimers''.
