Sein Tango nuevo war für Astor Piazzolla eine Eintrittskarte in die Welt der klassischen Musik, wie sie noch kein andere „nichtklassischer“ Komponist gefunden hatte.

Heute werden seine Kompositionen in Konzerthallen weltweit gespielt, und es gibt Arrangements für Symphonieorchester, Streichquartett, Bläserensembles, Mandolinenorchester, sogar für Cembalo... Escualo5 kehrt allerdings zu der Besetzung zurück, die Piazzolla die meiste Zeit seiner Karriere zur Verfügung hatte: Bandoneon, Violine, Klavier, Gitarre und Kontrabass.

Dabei geht es den Künstlern nicht darum, Piazzollas eigene Interpretationen nachzuahmen. Für diese erste Einspielung haben die Fünf sowohl beliebte wie weniger bekannte Stücke ausgesucht, darunter mit der Tango Suite und der Histoire du Tango zwei Werke, die original für zwei Gitarren und Flöte geschrieben waren.
