Wie kann man mit rein instrumentaler Musik Gefühle ausdrücken? Dieses Album versucht eine Antwort auf diese Frage mit Musik italienischer Komponisten des späten 16. und frühen 17. Jahrhunderts. David Brutti und Nicola Lamon demonstrieren die extravaganten stilistischen Möglichkeiten der Barockmusik. In den Jahrzehnten um 1600 wurde die Dominanz der menschlichen Stimme und des Textes in der Musik gebrochen.

Zunächst wurde die Polyphonie ornamental ausgeschmückt, um den »Verlust« des Textes zu ersetzen. Aber später, als die Grenzen zwischen vokaler und instrumentaler Musik immer fließender wurden, entstanden aus den vokalen Linien instrumentale Solos. Und schließlich entstand im dritten Jahrzehnt des 17. Jahrhunderts eine neue, freie und unabhängige Instrumentalmusik, in der ganz frei Polyphonie, tänzerische Abschnitte und emotional aufgeladene Phrasen gemischt wurden.

Brutti führt diese Entwicklung auf drei verschiedenen Instrumenten vor, und Nicola Lamon wechselt zwischen einem Cembalo (Nachbau eines Instruments von 1681) und zwei historischen Orgeln von 1578 bzw. 1660.
