Diese neue OSR-Aufnahme präsentiert die beiden ehrgeizigsten musikalischen Antworten auf Maurice Maeterlincks epochales Stück Pelléas et Mélisande von 1893. Der Dirigent Jonathan Nott hat eine neue Suite von Debussys Oper geschaffen, die viel umfangreicher ist und sich mehr auf das eigentliche Drama und die symphonische Entwicklung konzentriert als die bisherigen Suiten, die sich stark auf Debussys Zwischenspiele stützen.

Schönbergs Pelleas und Melisande wird oft als relativ »amorph« wahrgenommen, seine narrative Struktur ist undurchsichtig, so dass alle außer den expliziten Verweisen auf das Drama, auf dem Schönbergs Oper basiert, verborgen bleiben. In dieser Aufnahme führt Jonathan Nott eine neuartige Titelaufteilung und analytische Titel ein, die den Bezug der Musik zur Geschichte für den Hörer viel greifbarer machen. Die Gegenüberstellung mit der Musik von Debussys Oper ermöglicht es uns, beide Werke zu vergleichen und zu sehen, wie die wichtigsten Innovatoren der Musik der Jahrhundertwende auf diese eindringliche Geschichte reagierten, symbolistische Geschichte.

Entstanden ist eine einsätzige Tondichtung, die das Orchestre de la Suisse Romande unter Leitung von Nott auf diesem Album nun erstmals eingespielt hat. Auch ohne Singstimmen wird in der Suite symphonique der Spannungsbogen bis zum Schluss aufrechterhalten.
