Ein Meister aus Kroatien

Sein Name klingt griechisch, und doch muss er als der wichtigste Komponist des 20. Jahrhunderts in Kroatien angesehen werden: Boris Papandopulo. Sein Vater war ein Aristokrat griechischer Herkunft, aber seine Mutter, Maja Strozzi, war die berühmteste kroatische Opernsängerin ihrer Zeit, eng befreundet mit Igor Strawinski, der schnell zum Mentor und Förderer des jungen Musikers wurde. Im Vorkriegskroatien machte sich Papandopulo schnell einen Namen als Komponist und Dirigent der wichtigsten Zagreber Ensembles, wie der Oper und dem Rundfunkorchester. Nach einer kurzen Zwangspause (wegen angeblicher Kollaboration) bestimmte er dann im neugeschaffenen Jugoslawien wieder schnell tonangebend das musikalische Leben. Er war ebenfalls als Musikschriftsteller, Publizist, Kritiker, Pianist und Korrepetitor tätig. Sein musikalisches Oeuvre ist imposant: in seinen mehr als 450 Kompositionen ist wohl jede Gattung vertreten. Stilistisch ist Papandopulo ungemein vielseitig: Folklore, Neoklassizismus und Neobarock, aber auch impressionistische und expressionistische Idiome fließen in seine Tonsprache ein. Aber vor allem: Seine Musik ist immer voller Optimismus und Lebendigkeit, von mitreißender Spannkraft. Sein 2. Klavierkonzert und die Sinfonietta sind der ideale Einstieg in diesen Künstlerkosmos. A Master from Croatia

Boris Papandopulo's name may sound Greek, but he has to be regarded as the most important composer of the twentieth century in Croatia. His father was an aristocrat of Greek descent, while his mother, Maja Strozzi, was the most famous Croatian opera singer of her time and on close personal terms with Igor Stravinsky, who quickly became the young musician's mentor and promoter. Papandopolu quickly made a name for himself as a composer and as a conductor of the leading Zagreb ensembles, the local opera, and the radio orchestra prior to World War II. Following a short obligatory pause (because of supposed collaboration with the enemy), he again soon went on to play a prominent role in the music world of the newly created Yugoslavia. He was also active as a music writer, journalist, critic, pianist, and répétiteur. Papandopulo's musical oeuvre is imposing, and it may be said that every genre is represented in his more than 450 compositions. Stylistically, he is uncommonly multifaceted: folklore, neoclassicism, and neobaroque as well as impressionistic and expressionistic idioms flow into his musical language. Most importantly, however, his music is always full of optimism and vibrancy, full of captivating resiliency. His Piano Concerto No. 2 and the Sinfonietta form the ideal introduction to this artistic cosmos. And more is yet to be heard!
