Das Interesse an Louis Spohr wächst: Das zeigt nicht nur unsere Neueinspielung aller seiner symphonischen Werke. Auch unsere Edition aller Violinkonzerte hat sich ja verdientermaßen schon einen großen Namen gemacht. Wir wollen aber auch andere Facetten dieses universalen Romantikers dokumentieren und veröffentlichen diesen Monat Werke für Violine und Klavier in brillanter Interpretation von Ingolf Turban und Kolja Lessing. Spohrs außergewöhnliche Originalität als Komponist und als Geiger spiegelt sich in den hier erstmals eingespielten Werken seiner mittleren und späten Schaffensperiode, die auch seine Hinwendung zum Klavier dokumentieren. Angeregt durch seine pianistisch versierte zweite Ehefrau Marianne widmete sich der Komponist verstärkt der Komposition von Kammermusik mit Klavier. Klangliche Eleganz und Transparenz, filigrane Läufe und Bevorzugung der hohen, hellen Register des Instruments prägen Spohrs Klavierstil. Die Titelwahl „Duo Concertant“ offenbart namentlich Spohrs Intention, beide Instrumente in ebenbürtigem virtuosen Anspruch zu verbinden, die Violine aus ihrer ursprünglich dem Klavier untergeordneten Rolle zu emanzipieren. Im letzten jener drei groß angelegten Duowerke für Violine und Klavier, dem Anfang 1837 in Kassel komponierten Grand Duo concertant op. 112, folgt Spohr klassischen Formmodellen, und das Werk erweist sich als außerordentlich lichtes, vergnügt-charmantes Werk voller naturhafter Assoziationen, die Spohrs Naturverbundenheit, seine Wanderlust im Gebirge unschwer erahnen lassen In den 1846 / 47 komponierten 6 Salonstücken op. 135 eröffnet sich der ganze Facettenreichtum von Spohrs Spätstil, der hier in seiner subtilen Assoziation und Vermischung verschiedener historischer und zeitgenössischer Stilelemente ein durchaus heterogenes Gesamtbild des Zyklus’ bestimmt.

Interest in Louis Spohr is on the increase – a fact demonstrated not only by our new recording of his complete symphonic oeuvre but also by the outstanding reputation rightly earned by our edition of his complete violin concertos. However, since we would also like to document other facets displayed by this universal romanticist, this month we are releasing a brilliant interpretation of his compositions for violin and piano by Ingolf Turban and Kolja Lessing. Spohr’s extraordinary originality both as a composer and as a violinist is revealed in the recording premiere of these works from his middle and late compositional periods, which also document his turn to the piano. Inspired by his second wife Marianne, a talented pianist, Spohr began devoting his energies to the composition of chamber music with the piano. Tonal elegance and transparency, filigree scales, and a preference for the piano’s high registers mark his piano style. His selection of the title Duo Concertant reflects his intention to bring together both instruments in equal virtuoso roles, thus freeing the violin from what had formerly been its subordinate role in relation to the piano. In the last of these three magnificent duo works for violin and piano, the Grand Duo concertant op. 112, Spohr follows classical formal models and produces a work that proves to be of extraordinary lightness and delightful charm and full of natural associations lending clear expression to his love of nature and hiking in the mountains. The great many facets forming Spohr’s late style reveal themselves in the Six Salon Pieces op. 135 composed during 1846-47. Here this style subtly brings together and blends various historical and contemporary stylistic elements to produce a cycle forming a very heterogeneous overall picture.
