Die erste englische Oper aus Boston
In der Kategorie »Beste Opernproduktion« wurden bereits in den letzten Jahren drei Produktionen aus Boston für den Grammy nominiert. Jetzt veröffentlicht cpo erneut in Kooperation mit dem Boston Early Music Festival eine weitere barocke Oper - dieses Mal von John Blow, die als die erste »eigentliche« englische Oper gilt. Die auffälligen Parallelen zu Purcells »Dido and Aeneas« lassen vermuten, dass diese beiden Werke zeitnah entstanden und in Beziehung zueinander stehen. Während aber »Dido and Aeneas« mit beiden Füßen fest auf dem Boden der epischen Tradition steht, gilt »Venus and Adonis« als ein Musterbeispiel für die Gattung der Pastorale. Das Drama ist durchweg mit Musik versehen und bietet drei Aufzüge mit einem zauberhaften pastoralen Prolog und einem ergreifend tragischen Ende. Nach Charpentiers »Actéon« (jpc...) wird jetzt auch »Venus and Adonis« unter der bewährten Leitung und Mitwirkung der Lautenisten Paul O'Dette und Stephen Stubbs mit dem Kammerensemble des Boston Early Music Festivals und hochkarätigen jungen Solisten auf hohem Niveau zum Leben erweckt.

The First English Opera – from Boston
During recent years three cpo productions from Boston have received Grammy nominations in the category of the Best Opera Production. Again in cooperation with the Boston Early Music Festival, we are now releasing yet another baroque opera, this time a work by John Blow regarded as the first »real« English opera. The striking parallels between it and Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas suggest that the two works were composed at about the same time and are interrelated in some way. While Dido and Aeneas stands firmly in the epic tradition, however, Venus and Adonis is a model example of the pastoral genre. The drama is accompanied by music throughout its length and offers three acts together with an enchanting pastoral prologue and a grippingly tragic ending. Following Charpentier’s Actéon (cpo 777 613-2) the Boston Early Music Festival Chamber Ensemble and outstanding young soloists now lend new life to Venus and Adonis in a top-quality performance under the leadership of the lutenists Paul O’Dette and Stephen Stubbs and with their participation.

Und vor allem hörte man eine prächtige Musik, deren Vielfalt in der vorliegenden Aufnahme bestens zur Geltung kommt. Der rundum gelungene Eindruck wird durch die zugefügten zwei Vokalwerke und den instrumentalen ›Ground‹ noch verstärkt; ein besonderes Plus der CD ist der sehr kundige und ausführliche Begleittext.«Gramophone: »Wundervolle Aufnahme.«
