Der sächsische Oberkapellmeister Johann Gottlieb Naumann wird erst in letzter Zeit wiederentdeckt. Damit wird ein Komponist sichtbar, der mit 25 Bühnenwerken und zahlreichen für die Dresdner Hofkirche entstandenen kirchenmusikalischen Kompositionen die wichtigste Dresdner Musikerpersönlichkeit zwischen Hasse und Carl Maria von Weber war, zwischen denen er in vieler Hinsicht auch eine stilistische Brücke bildete. Seine musikalische Ausbildung bekam der gebürtige Dresdener – wie könnte es anders sein – in Italien, wo er ab 1759 in Padua Schüler von Tartini und in Bologna von Padre Martini war. In Italien hatte er auch seine ersten Erfolge als Opernkomponist. 1764 bekam er die Stelle als Kirchen-Compositeur am kursächsischen Hof in Dresden, besuchte aber immer wieder Italien – und hier besonders Padua. Dort bekam er denn auch den Auftrag zur Komposition des Metastasio-Librettos »La passione di Gesù Cristo«, das wir in der 15 Jahre später entstandenen Vertonung von Giovanni Paisiello genau vor einem Jahr veröffentlicht haben. Die Musik dieses empfindsamen Werks hat eine starke stilistische Nähe zu Mozarts drei Jahre später entstandener Betulia liberata. Und dass Mozart Naumann schätzte, ist ja nicht die schlechteste Empfehlung.

It is only recently that Johann Gottlieb Naumann, Saxony's principal music director, has begun to be rediscovered. It is thus that a composer has come into view who penned twenty-five stage works and numerous sacred works for the Dresden court church and was that city's most important musical personality between Hasse and Carl Maria von Weber, forming a stylistic bridge between the two in many a respect. The Dresden native received his musical training – how could it be otherwise? – in Italy, where he was a student of Tartini in Padua beginning in 1759 as well as of Padre Martini in Bologna. It was also in Italy that Naumann celebrated his first successes as an opera composer. In 1764 he was appointed church composer at the court of the Elector of Saxony in Dresden, but he was able to visit Italy again, this time focusing his stay on Padua, where he was commissioned to set Metastasio's libretto La passione di Gesù Cristo, a text we released exactly a year ago in a setting by Giovanni Paisieillo. The music of Naumann's work of fine emotionality exhibits a strong stylistic affinity to La Betulia liberata, an oratorio set by Mozart three years later. Mozart himself valued Naumann – a strong celebrity endorsement indeed!
