Und noch eine Entdeckung aus Holland
Seit ein paar Jahren hat cpo mit bemerkenswerten Wiederbelebungen unter Beweis gestellt, dass unser westliches Nachbarland nicht nur im 15. und 16. Jahrhundert musikalisch Interessantes und Wesentliches zu bieten hatte. Röntgen, van Gilse und Badings zeigen, dass am Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts das holländische Musikleben zu neuer Größe erwacht war. Neben Alfons Diepenbrock war es vor allem Johan Wagenaar, der als einer der Väter dieser Wiedergeburt des niederländischen Musiklebens gelten muss. Aus ärmlichsten Verhältnissen kommend, ermöglichte ihm seine ungeheuere Musikalität doch früh ein Fortkommen und bald war er selbst ein gesuchter Lehrer und Direktor des königlichen Konservatoriums in Den Haag. Zugleich war er einer der führenden Organisten und Bach-Interpreten seiner Zeit. Dennoch lagen seine kompositorischen Vorlieben beim Orchester. Und das zu Recht, wie man sich unschwer anhand unserer Neueinspielung ausgewählter Orchesterwerke überzeugen kann. Ob die hinreißend schwungvolle Ouvertüre »Der Widerspenstigen Zähmung« oder die in gleißendem Klang und satter Melodienseligkeit badende Fantasie »Lebenssommer«: Das ist ganz große spätromantische Symphonik, die gehört werden muss, und cpo wird hier sicherlich noch weiter graben!

Yet Another Discovery from Holland
For a few years now remarkable cpo rediscoveries have been revealing to the world just how much important and interesting music Germany's neighbor to the west has to offer – and not merely in the field of music of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Röntgen, van Gilse, and Badings demonstrate that Dutch music life rose to new greatness at the end of the nineteenth century. Together with Alfons Diepenbrock, it is above all Johan Wagenaar who has to be regarded as one of the founding fathers of this rebirth of Dutch music. Wagenaar came from the simplest of family circumstances, but his immense musicality enabled him to make early progress, with the result that he soon became a sought-after educator and then the director of the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. Although he was one of the leading organists and Bach interpreters of his era, his compositional predilection was for the orchestra. And he was the man for this musical job – as our new recording of selected orchestral works by him quite clearly shows. Whether the captivating swing of the overture to The Taming of the Shrew or the melodiousness of the Summer of Life fantasy, a work basking in glistening sound and sumptuous melodiousness, what we have here is absolutely superb late-romantic symphonic music just waiting to be heard. No doubt about it: cpo will continue to dig for treasures here!
