Einfallsreicher Hiller

Nach Werken von Ignaz Brüll, Fritz von Bose und Ferdinand Ries widmet sich die deutsche Pianistin Alexandra Oehler, deren Namen mittlerweile für hohes pianistisches Können und ein außergewöhnlich vielfältiges Repertoire steht, dieses Mal Ferdinand Hiller, der von Robert Schumann und Mendelssohn Bartholdy sehr geschätzt wurde. Und auch Chopin urteilte 1831: „Ein Bursche von gewaltigem Talent, ein Mensch voller Poesie, Feuer und Geist!“ Im heutigen Musikleben findet jedoch der in Frankfurt am Main geborene Dirigent, Komponist, Pianist, Musikpädagoge, Musikschriftsteller und Musikorganisator Hiller leider nur noch wenig Beachtung, auch wenn sich sein Geburtstag 2011 zum 200. Male jährte. Bekannt sein dürfte er als Widmungsträger von Schumanns Klavierkonzert und vielleicht noch durch seine Kontakte zu zahlreichen musikalischen Zeitgenossen. Im Alter von zehn Jahren schickte Hillers Vater seinen Sohn zu Johann Nepomuk Hummel nach Weimar, unter dem Hiller große Fortschritte als Pianist machte. Die hier eingespielte Auswahl seiner Klavierwerke entstand in den 1850er und 1860er Jahren, demnach während Hillers Zeit in Köln, wo er bis zu seinem Tod 35 Jahre lang lebte. Seine Klaviersonaten stellen formal gesehen eine Besonderheit dar: Ihre drei Sätze gehen nahtlos ineinander über. Und Ihnen wie auch den übrigen Klavierkompositionen wurde allgemein hoher Einfallsreichtum zugestanden.

After compositions by Ignaz Brüll, Fritz von Bose, and Ferdinand Ries, the German pianist Alexandra Oehler, whose name has come to stand for high keyboard skill and an extraordinarily varied repertoire, now turns to Ferdinand Hiller, who earned high praise from Robert Schumann and Felix Mendelssohn. And in 1831 Chopin judged, »A fellow of immense talent, a man full of poetry, fire, and spirit.« In today’s music world, however, the conductor, composer, pianist, music teacher, music writer, and music organizer Hiller unfortunately meets with little notice – and the two hundredth anniversary of his birth in 2011 did nothing to change this. He is known as the dedicatee of Schumann’s Piano Concerto and perhaps from his contacts with numerous musicians of his time. At the age of ten Hiller’s father sent him to Weimar to study with Johann Nepomuk Hummel, under whom the young musician made great progress as a pianist. He composed the selections from his piano works recorded here during the 1850s and 1860s while residing in Cologne, where he lived for thirty-five years until his death. In formal respects his piano sonatas represent a special case in that their three movements continue without a break. His contemporaries universally agreed that his sonatas and other piano compositions possessed a great wealth of imagination.
