Carl Loewe Vol. 20 mit Robert Wörle

Auf Vol. 20 unserer Loewe-Liededition widmet sich der gefragte Tenor Robert Wörle einer auf ihn genau abgestimmten Zusammenstellung von Liedern und Balladen, die wieder eine spannende und vielfältige Mischung aus Wohlbekanntem und neuen Entdeckungen bieten. Die Stücke der vorliegenden Auswahl entstammen einer Zeitspanne von 44 Jahren und einen Schwerpunkt der Stücke bilden Loewes Vertonungen griechischer Dichtungen. Loewe dazu: “Wenden wir uns nun zu demjenigen Volke, welches in den schönen Künsten allen anderen Völkern Lehrer und Vorbild war, den Griechen...So entstanden 1835 die Ode An Aphrodite, ein Lied der im 7. Jahrhundert v. Chr. lebenden griechischen Dichterin Sappho, und An die Grille– eine Ode nach Anakreon; hier handelt es sich bei dem griechischen Gedicht nicht um Worte des im 6. Jh. v. Chr. lebenden gleichnamigen Dichter, sondern es gehört zu den sog. Anakreonteen, Gedichten, die etwa 500 Jahre nach Anakreon in dessen Stil verfasst wurden. Und mit Auf sich selbst I & II und An die Leier vertonte der ganz junge Loewe schon 1815 drei tatsächliche Gedichte des Anakreon - alle in sehr guten Übersetzungen,”in denen die muntere Laune und der Witz des Dichters ausserordentlich gut aufgefasst ist.” (Loewe an seinen Verleger Peters).

On Vol. 20 of our Loewe Song Edition the sought-after tenor Robert Woerle dedicates himself to a program of songs and ballads put together especially for him and once again representing a suspenseful and varied blend of familiar favorites and new discoveries. The selection of pieces on the present CD spans forty-four years, with Loewe’s setting of Greek poems forming one focus. On this point Loewe stated, “Now let us turn to that people which in the fine arts was the teacher and model of all other peoples, to the Greeks ....” And so it was that in 1835 he set the ode “To Aphrodite,” a song by Sappho, a Greek woman poet who lived in the seventh century B. C.E., and “To the cricket,” an ode after Anacreon; in this case the Greek poem does not go back to an original by this poet of the sixth century B. C.E. but is one of the so-called Anacreontics, poems written in Anacreon’s style some five hundred years after his death. With “On himself I & II” and “To the lyre” the very young Loewe already in 1815 set three authentic poems by Anacreon — all of them in very good translations in which, as he wrote to his publisher Peters, “the cheerful mood and wit of the poet are captured extraordinarily well.” Cord Garben is of course once again our proficient piano accompanist.
