Man kann wohl sagen, dass er Beethovens wichtigster und bedeutendster Konkurrent in Wien auf dem Feld der Instrumentalmusik war: Anton Eberl. 1765 in Wien geboren, kam er früh in Berührung mit Mozart, mit dem ihn eine lebenslange Freundschaft verband. Nach vielen relativ erfolglosen Versuchen, als Opernkomponist in Wien Fuß zu fassen, ging er für einige Jahre nach St. Petersburg an den Zarenhof, wo er hauptsächlich Klavier unterrichtete. 1799 ließ er sich dann endgültig in Wien nieder und erlebte nun mit der Hinwendung zur Instrumentalmusik –sowohl für Orchester als auch für den Kammermusiksaal- einen kometenhaften Aufstieg. Er wird schon 1802 ebenbürtig neben Beethoven gestellt: „Beyde haben Neuheit, Feuer und Kraft; beide strömen von Ideen über und zeichnen sich durch sehr vieles Genie, aber doch auch durch sehr viele Snderbarkeiten und bizarrerien aus, die man dem Genie verzeihen muß.“ Unsere Neueinspielungen mit dem Consortium Classicum geben dem zeitgenössischen Lobredner recht!

Between Mozart and Beethoven
It indeed may be said that Anton Eberl was Beethoven’s most important and significant rival in Vienna in the field of instrumental music. Born in Vienna in 1765, Eberl established early contact with Mozart and remained his friend throughout his life. After a few relatively unsuccessful attempts to gain a foothold as an opera composer in Vienna, Eberl went to the czar’s court in St. Petersburg, where he mainly taught piano. In 1799 he settled permanently in Vienna, turned to the composition of instrumental music for orchestra and for the chamber hall, and skyrocketed to the top. Already in 1802 he was ranked together with Beethoven: »Both have freshness, fire, and power, both are overflowing with ideas, and both are distinguished by a great amount of genius but also by a great many eccentricities and strange quirks that one must forgive the genius.« Our new recording by the Consortium Classicum confirms the judgment of this nineteenth-century panegyrist!
