Giovanni Battista Viotti (1755-1824) erhielt seine musikalische Ausbildung bei Gaetano Pugnani. In seinen Streichquartetten, die hier vollständig aufgenommen wurden, spielt die erste Violine eine prominente Rolle. Die Musik ist im frühklassischen Stil gehalten; noch auf den Prinzipien der Wiener Klassiker beruhend, deutet sie aber bereits auf die romantischeren Gefühle zukünftiger Zeiten hin. Das italienische Viotti Quartett ehrt mit dieser Aufnahme glanzvoll seinen Namensgeber.

In der Musikwelt nimmt Viotti nicht den Stellenwert ein, der ihm eigentlich gebührt. Kaum eine Komposition, die man nicht in seinem Repertoire haben sollte.

Obwohl die Aufnahme leicht hallig klingt, ist diese Gesamtausgabe das reinste Hörvergnügen und darum ein absolutes "Must Have".
