Neben der Reihe »Overtures from the British Isles« legt der britische Dirigent Rumon Gamba nun auch sein Augenmerk auf sinfonische Dichtungen aus seinem Heimatland. Unter dem Titel »British Tone Poems« stellt er Werke bekannter und unbekannter Komponisten des Inselkönigreichs gegenüber.
Während Ralph Vaughan Williams und William Alwyn zu den Klassikern gehören, sind Komponisten wie Henry Balfour Gardiner (der Großonkel von John Eliot Gardiner) oder Granville Bantock, dem Jean Sibelius seine dritte Sinfonie widmete, heute fast vergessen, wenngleich sie zu Lebzeiten höchstes Ansehen genossen.
Beide sind dem romantischen Stil verpflichtet, ihre Kompositionen beeindrucken mit harmonischer Dichte und epischer Melodiestruktur. Als Spezialist für Filmmusik vermag es Rumon Gamba, den elegischen Charakter dieser Tondichtungen und deren atmosphärische Klanglichkeit adäquat umzusetzen.
