Die Laute genoss im 16. Jahrhundert in Europa eine ähnliche Popularität wie das Klavier im 19. Jahrhundert. Und die beiden Lautenisten der vorliegenden Aufnahme sehen ihr Duo-Spiel durchaus dem vierhändigen Klavierspiel verwandt.

Nur, während Letzteres für die Ohren in bürgerlichen Salons bestimmt war, erklang die Laute in der Renaissance doch vor allem an adeligen Höfen. Die beiden Absolventen des Konservatoriums »Santa Cecilia« in Rom, Francesco Tomasi und Fabrizio Carta, wählten neben Stücken von Milano, Lasso und Dowland auch weniger bekanntes Repertoire von Thomas Robinson, John Johnson oder Joan Ambrosio Dalza.
