Der mehrfach preisgekrönte kanadische Komponist Christopher Tyler Nickel hat ein Opus magnum geschaffen: The Gospel According to Mark (Evangelium nach Markus) ist ein siebenstündiges Oratorium, das den Text aus der King-James-Bibel in seiner Gesamtheit vertont. Neben den Solostimmen (Sopran, Alt, Tenor, Bariton) ist ein reduziertes Orchester zu hören: Streicher, zwei Hörner, Oboe und Englischhorn. Die Sänger stellen keine bestimmte Person dar, sondern fungieren vielmehr als Chor von Geschichtenerzählern. Der Komponist wollte durch die Umgehung der Rollenzuweisung die Gesangspartien abstrakter gestalten und den Hörer zur stärkeren Konzentration auf den Text anregen.
