Mit seiner langjährigen Freundin, der Pianistin Kathryn Stott, hat Yo-Yo Ma auf »Songs from the Arc of Life« bekannte und beliebte Klassikmelodien aufgenommen. Das Album beginnt und endet mit zwei beliebten »Ave Maria«-Vertonungen: Am Anfang steht die helle, strahlende Version von Bach/Gounod, Schuberts nachdenklichere, ernstere Fassung bildet den Abschluss. Dazwischen finden sich beliebte Klassiker wie Brahms’ Wiegenlied, Dvoráks Lieder, Elgars Salut d’amour, Jacob Gades Jalousie, Saint-Saëns’ Schwan sowie atmosphärische Stücke von Debussy, Fauré, Gershwin oder Tschaikowsky.
Es sind allesamt Stücke, die Ma und Stott oft gemeinsam im Konzert gespielt, bisher jedoch nie aufgenommen haben. »Wir wollen unser Publikum einladen, sich zu erinnern und sich vorzustellen, wie der Soundtracks des eigenen Lebens wohl klingen könnte«, so Yo-Yo Ma.
