In bewegenden Bildern, Archivaufnahmen und Fotografien entdeckt man ein Stück Geschichte und lernt das künstlerische und gesellschaftliche Umfeld der Komponisten und ihrer Werke kennen. Der charismatische Lockenkopf erzählt, dirigiert, erklärt und legt auch mal selbst Hand ans Instrument, um dem Zuschauer die Welt von Mahler, Strawinsky, Messiaen, Stockhausen und Co. näher zu bringen. Auf seiner musikalischen Reise durch das 20. Jahrhundert wird der Dirigent unterstützt von dem City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra und namhaften Solisten wie Anne Sofie von Otter, Felicity Palmer oder Gidon Kremer.
