Christmas Eve, 1818. The gentle strains of two voices and guitar, first heard in the little church of Oberndorf, were to become the world‘s most famous carol. Today, the melody of Silent Night is familiar to almost everyone – but few people know its origin. Composer Franz Xaver Gruber, who worked in Salzburg as a teacher and musician, set to music the poignant text by the priest Joseph Mohr. Folk-singers from the Zillertal in Tyrol brought the song to a wider audience, and it has since become legendary. This CD marks the 200th anniversary, bringing to life the history surrounding what is perhaps the most beautiful, but certainly the most successful Christmas carol of all time. A musical journey takes the listener through 15 places associated with Silent Night, in the Province of Salzburg, Upper Austria, Bavaria and Tyrol: Salzburg, Hochburg- Ach, Burghausen, Ried im Innkreis, Mariapfarr, Oberndorf, Laufen, Ansdorf, Berndorf, Hintersee, Wagrain, Hallein, Fügen, Hippach and Laimach.
