Toshiro Mayuzumi war einer der bedeutendsten japanischen Komponisten des 20. Jahrhunderts und genoss international einen hervorragenden Ruf, der dem von Toru Takemitsu ebenbürtig ist, ebenso wie dem eines Enfant terrible der japanischen Musikwelt der Nachkriegszeit. Vielseitig und produktiv, hat er Musik für Filme, das Theater, die Olympischen Spiele 1964 in Tokio und Rundfunksendungen beigesteuert. Seine Begeisterung für die avantgardistische westliche Musik führte ihn zu einem Studium in Paris, und die Phonologie Symphonique ist eine Synthese aus Varèse-ähnlichen akustischen Experimenten und seriellen Techniken. Die jazzig gefärbte Bacchanale ist Mayuzumis Versuch, "einen Klangkosmos zu erzeugen, der die vitalen Energien des Ursprungs der Musik widerspiegelt", und die symphonische Dichtung Samsara ist ein musikalischer Ausdruck der buddhistischen Lehre, ein Versuch, dem scheinbar endlosen Zyklus von Geburt und Wiedergeburt zu entkommen.
