Hail Caledonia – Scotland in Music ist eine musikalische Hommage des Dirigenten Iain Sutherland und des City of Glasgow Philharmonic Orchestra an sein Heimatland.

Die 1995–96 in der Royal Concert Hall in Glasgow live aufgenommenen und neu gemasterten Aufnahmen enthalten auch Einspielungen der City of Glasgow Pipe Band, des City of Glasgow Chorus und der Dudelsackspieler David Wotherspoon und Iain McDonald. Sutherland liefert brillante Orchesterarrangements von The Black Bear Salute, dem angeblich schnellsten Regimentsmarsch der britischen Armee, und dem zeitlosen Amazing Grace sowie seine eigene farbenfrohe Three Scottish Castles Suite.

Roy Williamsons hymnisches Flower of Scotland erklingt neben Robert Dockers Abbey’s Craig, besser bekannt als Scots Wha Hae, und Granville Bantocks üppiger Bearbeitung eines traditionellen schottischen Wanderliedes, Kishmul’s Galley. Außerdem erklingen Mendelssohns lebhaftes Scherzo aus seiner Schottischen Sinfonie und Malcolm Arnolds wunderbar umgesetzte Vier schottische Tänze, die von einem traditionellen »schottischen Schnalzer« angefeuert werden.

Musik von Granville Bantock, Eric Coates, Ernest Tomlinson und Alexander McKenzie ist ebenso zu hören wie die Titelmelodien zu zwei äußerst beliebten schottischen Fernsehdramen, Hamish McCunns Land of the Mountain and the Flood, Titelmelodie zu Sutherland’s Law, und Arthur Blakes Take the High Road. Und zum Schluss das mitreißende Devil’s Finale / Reel o’ Tulloch aus Ian Whytes Ballettmusik Donald of the Burthens.

Das Ergebnis ist eine glorreiche musikalische Feier der Saltire und des Tartans, mit informativen Booklet-Notizen von Robert Matthew-Walker.
