Fernando Sor (1778-1839) revolutionierte die Art, für die Gitarre zu komponieren: Seine Werke spiegeln nicht nur ein tiefes Verständnis von Kontrapunkt und Polyphonie wider, das an den Einfluss Haydns erinnert. Seine innovative Technik, vom Einsatz natürlicher Flageoletts bis hin zu polyphonen Texturen, verwandelte die Gitarre zudem in ein Instrument, das fortan ein Spektrum orchestraler Klänge erzeugen konnte.
