Lassos zwölfteiliger Motettenzyklus Prophetiae Sibyllarum aus den 1550er Jahren gehört zu den faszinierendsten Werken der Spätrenaissance. Als textliche Grundlage dienten zwölf antike Texte, die als vorchristliche Prophezeiungen der sogenannten Sibyllen ausgelegt wurden, welche die Geburt Christi verkünden. Lasso vertonte sie in einem extrem chromatischen Stil, der in seiner harmonischen Kühnheit stark an die Madrigale Gesualdos erinnert.
