Jakob Lindberg, einer der bedeutendsten Vertreter seines Instruments, kam über die Gitarre zur Laute und spielte mehrere Jahre lang beides. Als er beschloss, sich ausschließlich dem historischen Lautenrepertoire zu widmen, gab er mit einigem Bedauern seine erste Liebe auf. In seinem letzten Jahr mit der modernen Gitarre arbeitete Lindberg an Benjamin Brittens »Nocturnal after John Dowland«, einem der wegweisenden Gitarrenwerke des 20. Jahrhunderts. Als er viel später erfuhr, dass Britten ursprünglich vorgehabt hatte, ein Stück für die Laute zu komponieren, begann er damit, Teile von Nocturnal auf seiner Renaissance-Laute zu spielen, und beschloss bald, eine Transkription des gesamten Werks anzufertigen.
»Nocturnal« basiert auf John Dowlands vierteiligem Lied »Come, Heavy Sleep« und wurde von Jakob Lindberg davon inspiriert als Kernstück eines Konzerts mit überwiegend elisabethanischen Stücken platziert, von denen viele auch Aspekte der Nacht hervorrufen. Dowland selbst ist mit einer Auswahl von sechs Lautensolos vertreten, während der Eröffnungsteil aus fünf Stücken von Dowlands älterem Kollegen Anthony Holborne besteht. Der Schlusstitel stammt von Holbornes Zeitgenossen John Johnson und wünscht dem Hörer »Gute Nacht und gute Ruhe«.
