Der italienische Komponist Pietro Mascagni (1863–1945) hinterließ ein breit gefächertes Oeuvre, das neben 15 Opern auch zahlreiche Instrumentalwerke und geistliche Musik beinhaltet. Die »Messa di Gloria« von 1887 war seinerzeit äußerst populär, wohl, weil sie mit pathetischen Chören, kraftvollen Arien und orchestralem Pomp viele Elemente einer Verismo-Oper enthält. Das Ensemble Seicentonovecento unter Flavio Colusso hat für die vorliegende CD diese zu Unrecht vergessene Messe mit viel Liebe zum Detail neu eingespielt.
