Der Name „Don Kosaken“ gibt bereits Auskunft über die Herkunft dieser ganz besonderen Menschen: Die Ufer des Don sind die Heimat der Kosaken und die Wiege einer großen musikalischen Tradition, deren Geschichte mehr als 500 Jahre zurückreicht. Wenn auch heute Don Kosaken und Musik untrennbar miteinander verbunden zu sein scheinen, so waren die eigentlichen Namensgeber nicht nur musisch veranlagt. Als „freie Krieger“, wie Kosaken übersetzt heißt, lebte, siedelte und kämpfte das legendäre Reitervolk im 15. Jahrhundert am Don, aber auch am Schwarzen Meer, in Sibirien und an der Wolga. Alte Gesänge und Volksweisen bilden nach wie vor den Schwerpunkt des Repertoires des Don KosakenChors Russland, der durch Konzerte, Rundfunk und Fernsehen weltweite Bekanntheit und Anerkennung erlangt hat. Hier präsentieren die Sänger die russisch-orthodoxe Liturgie zum Heiligabend, die festlichste und aufwendigste Feier im Kirchenjahr.
