Die musikalische Sprache des 1948 in London geborenen und seit 2007 in der südafrikanischen Provinz lebenden Malcolm Dedman ist von einer Reihe unterschiedlicher Einflüsse geprägt, darunter Bartók und Messiaen, sein Bahá'í-Glaube und in jüngster Zeit auch seine neue südafrikanische Heimat.
Auch Berührungspunkte mit anderen Komponisten sind zu hören, nicht zuletzt mit Debussy, Ravel, Barber und Ginastera. Diese Klavierwerke verkörpern eine breite Palette von Stimmungen, von sanfter Introspektion bis zu energischer, dissonanter Kraft.
