Louis Wayne Ballard – auch bekannt als »Honganozhe«, was in der Sprache der Quapaw »Steht bei den Adlern« bedeutet – war der erste indigene nordamerikanische Komponist von Kunstmusik, und sein umfassendes Wissen über die Musik, den Tanz und die Mythologie dieser Kultur floss in seine Kompositionen ein. Ballards Stil war eklektisch und umfasste tonale und zwölftönige Elemente, und die hier vorgestellten ausgewählten Stücke spiegeln die einzigartige Vielfalt seines Schaffens wider.
