Als junger Musiker in London und nach dem Erfolg seiner Bühnenmusik zu Shakespeares Sturm, die im April 1862 im Crystal Palace und einige Monate später in Manchester aufgeführt wurde, stellte Arthur Sullivan fest, dass die Konkurrenz in seiner Profession nicht gering war. Er unterrichtete an der Royal Chapel, wurde zum Professor für Pianoforte und Balladengesang an der Crystal Palace School of Art ernannt und nahm eine Stelle als Organist an der mondänen St. Michael’s Church am Chester Square an. Dann erhielt er erstmals Gelegenheit, ein Stück zu komponieren für das ballettversessene Londoner Publikum, das bei jeder Oper eine Tanzeinlage erwartete: »L’Île enchantée«.
