Haydn soll in London ein englisches Libretto für ein Oratorium, das auf John Miltons Epos PARADISE LOST fußte, mit der Anregung zur Vertonung übergeben worden sein. Baron von Swieten, kaiserlicher Bibliothekar in Wien, übernahm dann in enger Zusammenarbeit mit Haydn die Übersetzung und Bearbeitung, was einige Zeit in Anspruch nahm. Haydn war bereits 64 Jahre alt, als er die Schöpfung komponierte. Im April 1799 wurde das Oratorium in Wien uraufgeführt.
