Iwan der Schreckliche – das zweite gemeinsame Projekt von Sergei Eisenstein und Sergej Prokofieff – ist wie Alexander Newski ein Historien-Epos; in zwei Teilen zeigt es Aufstieg und Niedergang des autokratischen Herrschers Iwan IV. im 16. Jahrhundert.
Einzigartig in der Filmgeschichte ist die musikalische Gestaltung von Sergej Prokofieff, der für die beiden Teile eine Partitur mit epischem Ausmaß konzipiert hat. Prokofieffs Melodienreichtum lebt dabei von der ausdrucksstarken russischen Liedhaftigkeit, die vor allem in den geistlichen Stücken aus der russisch-orthodoxen Liturgie widerhallt.
