Erstaunlich
Zwischen 1680 und 1695 komponierte Henry Purcell 24 Oden und »Welcome Songs«. Obwohl »nur« höfische Gelegenheitsmusiken, schuf er hier unglaublich inspirierte Musik von erstaunlicher Qualität, wenn man die literarisch meist wenig bemerkenswerten Texte berücksichtigt. Den Kassenbüchern zufolge war die Zahl der Ausführenden erstaunlich gering. Selbst Purcells aufwendigste Oden scheinen für etwa zwölf Instrumente und vier Sänger, für Soli und Chöre, konzipiert worden zu sein. Le Banquet Céleste wählte diesen kammermusikalischen Ansatz für die wenig beachteten Meisterwerke.
