Zwischen 1953 und 1967 schrieb der italienische Komponist Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco eine Reihe von Greeting Cards. Diese 52 musikalischen Folianten, von denen 21 für die Gitarre geschrieben wurden – ein Instrument, das ihn inspiriert hatte, seit er Segovia zum ersten Mal spielen hörte –, sind Porträts von bewunderten Kollegen. Castelnuovo-Tedescos Vorstellungskraft und technische Meisterschaft werden durch die Verwendung von Rhythmen, die mit der Nationalität der Widmungsträger verbunden sind, oder durch Anspielungen auf deren Namen verstärkt. Der Zyklus bietet einen überraschenden, großzügigen und lohnenden Fundus an musikalischer Kryptologie, der seine kleine Form.
