Herzhafte, deftige Tänze der englischen Renaissance, so von ihrem Namensgeber John Playford, von Thomas Campion und Tobias Hume, haben die Musikerinnen und Musiker der Playfords für das neue Album zusammengestellt, dabei geht es um »Garlic & Onions«, »Strawberry & Cream«, genussreiche Themen und das unverfälschte Leben auf dem Lande.
Das deutsche Ensemble »The Playfords« ist bekannt dafür, Musik vergangener Jahrhunderte in neuer Weise zu präsentieren, exzellent musiziert natürlich. Ihr Album »Luther tanzt« wurde ein echter Bestseller. Das neue Album heißt »Garlic & Onions« und bei der Musik geht es um Vergnügungen und kulinarischen Genuss im weitesten Sinne.
Dabei steht Musik der englischen Renaissance wie die Werke von Thomas Campion oder Tomas Hume, aber auch englische Folkmusik im Vordergrund, die nicht nur die Freude am guten Essen (und Trinken), sondern auch um die Sehnsucht nach einem scheinbar unverfälschteren Leben auf dem englischen Land im 16. und 17. Jahrhundert beschreiben. Inspiriert von John Playfords berühmter Sammlung »The English Dancing Master«, der auch Namensgeber für das Ensemble war, enthält das Album vergnügliche traditionelle Tunes wie »Nutmegs and Ginger«, »Lumps of Pudding« und »The Cooks Humour«, welche mit Witz und Zweideutigkeiten kulinarische Vergnügungen thematisieren. Der Titelsong »Garlic and Onions« stammt vom (deutschen) Liedermacher Tim Liebert (...). Lieder wie »The Merry Merry Milkmaids« beschwören Bilder fröhlicher ländlicher Eskapaden herauf, während Tobias Humes »Tobacco« eine Hommage an den Genuss des damals Exotischen ist. »I will give my love an apple« thematisiert die Macht der Liebe durch die verborgene Symbolik der Frucht, während »Glory of the Kitchen« die Bedeutung der guten Küche preist. Die akribische Recherche und die Leidenschaft der Playfords für ungewöhnliche Musik spiegeln sich in jedem Stück wider.
