Thomas Lupo, Spross einer seit 1540 eng mit dem englischen Hof verbundenen Musikerfamilie, trat bereits als Jugendlicher in den Dienst des Prinzen Henry und dann von dessen Bruder Charles (später Charles I.). Sein umfangreiches und vielfältiges Œuvre für die Gambe repräsentiert nichts weniger als die goldenen Jahre der Gambenmusik im jakobinischen England. Fretwork stellt hier 20 der schönsten und komplexesten Werke für drei-, fünf- und sechsstimmiges Gambenconsort vor. Diese entstanden ursprünglich exklusiv zur Unterhaltung am englischen Königshof.
