Einar Englund (1916–99) war nicht nur einer der bedeutendsten Symphoniker Finnlands; Er war auch einer der bedeutendsten Pianisten seines Landes und war für eine Karriere als Virtuose prädestiniert, bis er sich als Soldat im Kampf gegen die einmarschierenden Russen einen Finger verletzte. Er schrieb überraschend wenig für sein eigenes Instrument, aber die Werke, die er schuf, glänzten mit der stählernen Stärke und strukturellen Klarheit Prokofijevans, belebt von dem ironischen Humor, der für den Komponisten selbst typisch war.
