Das nach dem 2. Weltkrieg gegründete Ensemble begann seine Karriere als »I Musici di Roma«. Gegründet wurde es von Studenten der Academia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia. Das Repertoire bestand vorwiegend aus italienischer Barockmusik. Stets musizierte das Ensemble allerdings auf modernen Instrumenten und stand der heute so akzeptierten und praktizierten historischen Aufführungspraxis lange Zeit sehr skeptisch gegenüber. Doch schon Arturo Toscanini war von den zupackenden, straffen Interpretationen der I Musici begeistert. Diese Box enthält die besten Aufnahmen des weltbekannt gewordenen Ensembles für British Columbia, bisher nicht auf CD veröffentlicht. Es handelte sich um italienisches Repertoire, das nur zum Teil später noch einmal für Philips eingespielt wurde.
